This year is really different. The LG Twins have escaped the magic number of 49 wins.
LG won 9-6 against the KT Wiz on April 27 at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, South Korea. Not only did it snap a four-game losing streak, but it also finally gave them their first win of the second half of the season and pushed the gap back to 1.5 games over second-place SSG.
It’s been a long, long nine days.
After winning their 49th game against the Sajik Lotte Giants on the 8th, LG lost all four of their games from the 9th against the Sajik Lotte to the 25th against the Suwon KT Wiz. In the meantime, they had fallen to just 0.5 games behind SSG Landers.
Playing a big role in LG’s victory were their center fielders, who had been silent during the losing streak.
Starting with Moon Sung-joo’s three-hit, one RBI performance, Kim Hyun-soo and Oh Ji-hwan followed with multi-hit, two-RBI outbursts, and Moon Bo-kyung atoned for her costly mistake the day before with her third home run of the season.
The first inning belonged to KT. In the bottom of the second inning, Lee Ho-yeon hit a solo home run to left field off LG starter Lee Jung-yong. From there, the LG batting lineup showed its usual focus. Park Hae-min singled up the middle and stole second, and Shin Min-jae grounded out to put runners on first and third. When Hong Chang-ki grounded out, Park Hae-min scored to tie the game.
Back-to-back singles by Moon Sung-ju and Kim Hyun-soo and a walk by Austin Dean loaded the bases for the third run, thanks to Oh Ji-hwan’s single to right and an error by the right fielder. Moon Bo-kyung then hit a changeup from KT starter William Cuevas for a two-run home run.
In the eighth inning, Kim Hyun-soo hit a two-run double with runners on first and third to end the losing streak.
But it’s still a shaky LG starting rotation.
Starter Lee Jung-yong gave up four runs in four innings. Following Adam Plutko’s six innings of three runs and Im Chan-kyu’s 4.1 innings of three runs on the 25th, the starting pitching was shaky again.
However, unlike the previous two games, the bullpen of Kim Jin-sung, Lee Woo-chan, Choi Dong-hwan (2 runs), Jung Woo-young, and Ham Deok-joo kept the KT bats in check.
LG’s 50th win is a big deal.
It is the first time since 1995 that LG has reached 50 wins, and the team’s regular season winning percentage is 69.7% (22 out of 33 times, excluding the two major leagues).
In the 1990s, LG won a total of two titles (1990-1994). Notably, the last time they won the title in 1994, they also reached the 50-win mark. With LG looking to win its first title in 29 years this season, reaching the 50-win mark gave fans a chance to chant “Again 1994.
KT, meanwhile, was left disappointed by Cuevas’ six-run outing in three innings. The loss also ended their three-game winning streak. 스포츠토토
