Boston signs ‘Mondesi’ instead of Ha-sung Kim

The American Major League Baseball (MLB) Boston Red Sox succeeded in reinforcing their shortstop. He embraced Adalberto Mondesi (28).

Boston announced on the 25th (Korean time), “We have agreed to a trade to the Kansas City Royals for left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor and for shortstop Mondesi.”

Mondesi is the son of outfielder Raul Mondesi, who played with Chan Ho Park for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1990s. Debuting in the big leagues in 2016 with a Kansas City uniform, he recorded a batting average of 0.244, 311 hits, 38 home runs, 157 RBIs, 180 runs scored, 133 stolen bases, a slugging percentage of 0.408, and an on-base percentage of 0.280 in 358 games over seven major league seasons.

Although he has his skills, he has been plagued by injuries every year. 102 games in 2019 is the highest. He played in 59 games in 2020, when he played a shortened season of 60 games per team due to the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19). At the time, he posted a batting average of .256 (56 hits in 219 at-bats), six home runs and 22 RBI. In his last season, he disappeared early due to a cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee at the end of April. The performance of the 2022 season is a batting average of 0.140 (7 hits in 50 at-bats) and 3 RBIs in 15 games.

Despite the risk factor, Boston boldly recruited Mondesi. He had to fill an infield void. Existing shortstop Zander Bogarts was transferred to the San Diego Padres as a free agent. It was a large contract worth 280 million dollars over 11 years. Second baseman Trevor Story also underwent right elbow ligament surgery in the middle of the month. It is expected to take 4-6 months to return.

Boston moved multi-player Enrique Hernandez, who had primarily played center field for the past two years, to the infield. 안전놀이터 Hernandez has often played both second base and shortstop. Mondesi was chosen as the partner to form the Keystone duo. High marks were given to his defensive ability and quick feet. Mondesi showed off 32 steals in 2018, 43 steals in 2019 and 24 steals in 2020. In particular, in 2020, he ranked 1st in the entire major league in the corresponding department document and 2nd in 2019.

Initially, Boston was mentioned as a trade opponent for Kim Ha-seong (San Diego). As San Diego joined hands with Bogatz, Kim Ha-sung’s position decreased. Trade rumors were raised, and Boston was chosen as a suitable opponent. However, Boston turned its attention to Mondesi when there was no progress in negotiations with San Diego.
